About / Importance – Located near the eastern gate of the ancient Rajgir city, this is a ruin of a large square stone structure. Popularly believed to be the jail where king Bimbisara was imprisoned by his son Ajatshatru. From this point the Gridhkut hill top which was the Buddha’s favourite meditation place is clearly visible. The legend goes as king Bimbisara’s only wish was to be able to watch this peak during his last days, even while he was imprisoned. Thus the place acquired the name of the legendary prison.
